A great website where you can learn to play gipsy jazz from one of the best guitarist in the world. www.rosenbergacademy.com
I work together with Stochelo for over 10 years now. Over the years we became a close friends. He played my guitars (Stochelo Rosenberg Signature Model , model Antique, EG-670) during many concerts, CD’s and DVD recordings. Memorable concerts are the performance of the Rosenberg Trio at the Django Reinhardt festival in Samois sur Seine 2003 (both Stochelo and Nous’che played their Eimers Birdseye limited Edition Signature models), Stochelo’s concert together with Niels Henning Ørstad Pederson and Dider Lockwood in Norway and many more.
> Model Antique by Eimers Guitars
At his academy Stochelo is using model Antique on all lessons. A guitar which appearance and sound are very close to the original Selmer guitars.
Guitar Players in the “Dutch school” of gypsy jazz are easily recognized by their singing and powerful tone, expressive vibrato, melodic improvisations, clear timing and dazzling technique. It is a tradition of studying and performing this style started by Stochelo Rosenberg.
To learn the music in this tradition, until recently the only option was to actually travel to Holland and live in the gypsy community soaking up as much information as one could by watching gypsy guitar players. Your chance to meet Stochelo would be very slim as his busy concert schedule takes him around the globe for most of the year. Things are about to change though…
As of now Stochelo is willing to share his unique approach to learning gypsy jazz. His views on practicing improvisation, timing and technique will completely transform your playing. If you are a student of gypsy jazz you would probably jump to the chance of having a one-on-one session with Stochelo showing you all the tricks of the trade. And now: this is a real possibility!
> Technique Lessons
The very first thing you should delve into as a student is the “Gypsy Jazz – Guitar Technique” lesson. Several video’s with Stochelo showing you exactly how to improve your left and right hand to get incredible speed and precision. Everything will be covered: from choosing a pick and strings to hand position, detailed analysis of rest stroke picking, vibrato and left hand finger exercises.
> Building your arsenal of licks
You will learn the sound of gypsy jazz the way Stochelo has learned it: studying solo’s related to specific songs in the repertoire. First you will watch Stochelo play a chorus or two on a well known gypsy jazz standard. Then the solo will be broken down into phrases and licks and through close-ups of the left and right hand Stochelo will show you exactly how everything is played and how it can be used in your own improvisations. Of course every note is written down for you, both in notes and tab with fingerings and the right pick directions. Executing the licks with the right fingerings and pick directions are key to having beautiful and powerful tone and your overall development as a gypsy jazz musician. Many lessons will be available when you sign up and more will be added each month. Check the sample lesson to watch an example!
> Improving your timing
Timing is important in all music and especially in jazz and gypsy jazz. Stochelo’s approach to practicing timing is in no way revolutionary but it is simple and very effective. You will have access to a special video lesson on practicing timing once you are enrolled as a student.
